The 112th Tour de France began in Lille on July 5, 2025, with an electric atmosphere. A Packed Opening Week – Sprinters, Crosswinds, and a Whirlwind of Jerseys

Stage 1’s course around Lille was supposed to be straightforward for the sprinters, but as so often happens in the opening week of the Tour, the flat terrain masked hidden traps. A late, punchy uphill finish saw Tadej Pogačar unleash a fierce sprint from a small GC group, crossing the line first and announcing his intent to control the race early. This victory marked a milestone—his 100th professional career win—and signaled to Vingegaard and the rest of the peloton that the Slovenian wasn’t waiting for the mountains to stamp his authority.

Then came Stage 5’s individual time trial in Caen. A 33 km drag, it was the first major opportunity for specialists like Remco Evenepoel to shine. Evenepoel did just that, winning by a comfortable margin. Pogačar produced a strong ride to limit losses, but Jonas Vingegaard underperformed, sliding further down the GC. Evenepoel’s stage win reshuffled the top five and, more importantly, gave us an early sense of who might be Pogačar’s biggest time-trial threat.

Stage 6 offered something completely different. Ben Healy of EF Education-EasyPost joined a long-range breakaway on the hilly roads toward Vire Normandie. Known for his aggressive racing style, Healy attacked solo with over 30 km to go, holding off a frantic chase from the peloton. His reward was not only a spectacular stage win but also the yellow jersey—the first time an Irish rider had worn it since Sean Kelly’s heyday. It was one of the feel-good stories of the first week.

The GC battle heated up again on Stage 7’s double ascent of the Mûr-de-Bretagne, a classic Breton climb where the race often explodes. Pogačar and Vingegaard went head-to-head, trading accelerations before Pogačar seized the moment to surge clear in the last 200 meters. His win put him back in yellow, making it clear that the jersey might not leave his shoulders again.

Over the next couple of stages, the sprinters had their say. Jonathan Milan captured Stage 8 in Laval with raw speed, holding off Wout van Aert, while Stage 9 saw Tim Merlier outgun Milan and Arnaud De Lie in one of the fastest mass sprints in Tour history. Entering the Pyrenees – First Major Tests

Stage 12 to Hautacam marked the peloton’s first real day in the high mountains. Hautacam, a climb etched into Tour lore, proved the perfect backdrop for a showdown. After a rest day, the race moved north and east into the Alps, where legendary climbs awaited. Stage 16 featured a return to Mont Ventoux, the “Giant of Provence.” This mountain has broken champions before. This time, a breakaway rider—Valentin Paret-Peintre—triumphed at the summit after a daring attack, while the main GC riders came in together, Pogačar still unassailable.

Stage 17 to Valence was marred by rain and tension. Crashes took down several riders, but Jonathan Milan managed to power through in a reduced bunch sprint to win his second stage of the race and tighten his grip on the green jersey.

Stage 18, from Vif to Courchevel via Col de la Loze, was another monster. This stage had been billed as the last real chance to crack Pogačar. The gradients of the Loze are among the steepest in the Alps. Vingegaard attacked repeatedly, at one point putting Pogačar into difficulty, but each time the Slovenian clawed back, eventually riding alongside his rival to the summit. Ben O’Connor, however, stole the headlines by winning the stage from a breakaway, showing resilience after a difficult start to the Tour.

Stage 19 to La Plagne was shortened due to weather but produced fireworks nonetheless. Thymen Arensman attacked early on the final climb and held off a chasing group containing Pogačar and Vingegaard to take an emotional stage win. For the GC, it was another day of status quo but high drama—Arensman’s triumph underlined that the Tour remains unpredictable even when the overall winner seems locked in.

Stage 20 offered one more rolling day for opportunists. Kaden Groves, usually known as a sprinter, surprised everyone by making the decisive breakaway and then soloing clear for his first Tour de France stage win. For Groves, it was a career highlight and proof of his versatility.

The Parisian Finale – Montmartre and a Crowning Moment

Stage 21 from Mantes-la-Ville to Paris added a new twist: circuits including the climb of Montmartre before the traditional Champs-Élysées run-in. Rain slicked the roads, and race organizers neutralized GC times 50 km from the finish to ensure the podium wouldn’t be decided by a crash. But there was still plenty to race for on the stage itself.
